Education
"Those involved in specialist palliative care services have an important function in providing education and training on the principles and practice of palliative care. This should be provided to a wide range of generalists who offer care to people with advanced, progressive, life-threatening disease and their carers."
NICE Improving Supportive and Palliative Care for Adults with Cancer, 2004
All our educational activity is designed with national initiatives and best practice in mind. We can offer training and education to groups or individuals, with topics covering many broad areas of palliative care. These include:
- The principles and practice of palliative care
- Symptom assessment and management
- Communication in palliative care e.g. breaking bad news, talking to children about serious illness
- Psychosocial support e.g. recognising and managing the emotional impact of life threatening illness
- Bereavement and loss
- Practice development e.g. implementing the Gold Standards Framework or the Liverpool Care Pathway for the Dying (see Links)
- Practical aspects of care e.g. use of a syringe driver
How do we teach?
The approach we use depends on the learning outcomes of the group but includes:
- Short courses
- Study days and ½ days
- Workshops lasting from 1 hour to a whole day depending on content
- Individual tutorials
- Formal lectures
- Secondment opportunities
