Occupational Therapy
The team of Occupational Therapists at the Priscilla Bacon Centre for Palliative Care are skilled in the assessment and treatment of the functional difficulties that patients face as a result of their condition and its treatment. They work with the multi disciplinary team to help patients and their carers achieve their optimum level of independence regardless of the stage of their disease.
The Occupational Therapy intervention a patient may receive includes:
- Retraining in the personal and domestic activities of every day life
- Learning to cope with altered levels of energy and independence
- Learning to relax
- Helping to adjust to changes in physical function and appearance
- Assessment and prescription of equipment to enable independence
- Assessment and advice regarding wheelchair and seating needs
- Improving motivation and self esteem via creative and group activities
The Occupational Therapists work with the patients towards goals set jointly between the patient, the multidisciplinary team, and carers. The team provides a service to inpatients, Rowan Centre day patients and also outreaches into the community.
