Physiotherapy

The Physiotherapy Team at the Priscilla Bacon Centre are experienced in the assessment and treatment of a wide range of physical problems that patients may develop as a result of cancer. They also work with patients with physical problems resulting from other conditions such as heart disease, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease.

Some examples of situations where physiotherapy may help are:

  • Assessing and teaching exercise to people with muscle weakness
  • Assessing and treating weakness and paralysis
  • Helping to control certain types of pain
  • Assisting patients with problems with balance and co-ordination
  • Assessing for, and providing equipment to help with independent mobility
  • Teaching techniques to help control certain types of breathlessness
  • Helping with management of Lymphoedema
  • Maintaining and improving physical fitness during and after some types of chemotherapy
  • Promoting well being and independence

Physiotherapists work as part of the multidisciplinary team to provide active, holistic care to patients with advanced, progressive illness. They work towards goals set jointly between the patient, the multidisciplinary team, and carers. The team provides a service to inpatients, Rowan Centre day patients and also outreaches into the community.
